The Road is not an accurate depiction of a single road trip from Melbourne to the Larapinta (Finke) River, it includes footage from various routes toward the central desert region captured on GoPro, Iphone or handheld camera while Sheree Cairney travelled to Alice Springs. The conceptual nature of the road is intentional. It could represent any journey we undertake, and the mental struggle that ensues. Long road trips can often force us to think deeply about our life beyond the bitumen or dirt in front of us, and to dwell on the most significant road trip we undertake, that of our own life journey. We may find ourselves asking fundamental questions such as: Are we living our true self? Have we chosen the right road? Will our discomforts be rewarded in the end? When surrounded by wide open landscapes those questions can sometimes dissolve, insignificant against the extraordinary vastness around us.
